Message:
First
of all I would like to wish each of you a happy New Years. The upcoming year should be interesting and
challenging for all of us. As you all
know Touchstone Management has taken over the day to day operation of Shoreline
Golf Links. Many of the people that we all became friends with are no longer
there, or are working in different capacities. We have had some useful meetings
with the local Touchstone management team. From these interactions it seems
that they are quite adamant that the conditions of the course will improve and
the greens fees will stay the same or be reduced. A larger maintenance staff has been hired and
areas for improvement have been noted.
The single most mentioned way to improve the course was the nuisance
bird population. Some new things are
being tried to remove the bird excrement from the greens, and repair the damage
done by the coots. A more aggressive approach will be taken to discourage the
birds from making their home on the golf course. The increased maintenance
staff will allow for improvements in the fairways and bunkers. A different aeration method and routine work
on the greens will also improve the quality of the greens. Unfortunately this
will not happen overnight, but will take time.
Please try to be patient and understanding. We should see small
improvements every month. Please check the web-site for more information on course
improvements.
We
hope we can increase our member’s participation in our weekly tournaments. We
have been experiencing a slow attrition in memberships over the past few
years. I would encourage all members to
see if any of their friends would be interested in joining our club. Many of
you already have an established foursome.
For those that do not I would encourage that you to go to the pro-shop
and sign up for a time. There are also times available for complete foursomes.
Also remember that members are required to release their tee-time by Friday if
they are not playing in the next Monday’s tournament.
I
am looking forward to our tournament schedule and seeing our members having
fun. Enjoy the upcoming year and avoid the dreaded 3 putt.

3) Greens Committee Report:
a)
The dirt fill for the ponds on the back nine has been completed. The
seeding and planting of this area will be done in the spring. These areas are
now considered as environmentally sensitive areas. Golf balls hit into them are
not to be retrieved and the shot should be played as ……
b)
The course, especially the front nine, is suffering from the negative
effect of the birds and the frost. The Coot count on the front nine has
increased to around 3000 which is about twice the long term average. The city
and the management team are well aware of this problem and will be working to correct
it. They have tried some testing of a spray on the greens but it has only a
short term effect.
c)
The course is considering a “Grand Re-opening” celebration in the spring
once the course conditions have improved.

5) Membership & Tee Time Availability:
Now that we have completed our registration for the New Year, we
have 110 members (107 renewals and 3 new members). Our membership has been
reduced from 123 for last year, so this has opened up some tee times which are listed
below. If you or your group would like to make a change, please contact Peter
Steiner (650-851-2081). Here are the changes already made and the status of
each tee time. Unless an open slot is indicated, a foursome is scheduled for
each time.

6) Environmental Hazards:
The water
holes on the back nine have been converted into environmental hazard areas.
They are marked with signs and yellow/green stakes. If you hit your ball into
these areas you cannot go into the area to retrieve or play your ball. The
penalty is one stroke. There are two options for putting a new ball into play.
One is to return to the spot from which the previous stroke was played and play
it again. The second is to drop a ball behind the point where it crossed the
hazard. The drop can be made as far back as the golfer wishes, so long as the
point where the ball crossed into the hazard is kept between the drop area and
the hole.
