The Board Meeting was called to order at
A motion to approve the minutes of the past meeting was made and approved.
Mike Anderson asked that he be permitted to read into the first paragraph of the minutes the recommendation of John Gannon that we make a special effort to use Roberts Rules of Order during our meetings. This suggestion was affirmed by the body and followed for the remainder of the meeting.
The recently held Member- Guest Tournament was briefly discussed. Because of late sign-ups and volunteer/pro shop staff comps, a reported number of 101 participants was incorrect. Dave Collins confirmed that the correct number was 92.
Frank Frankhauser asked that a definite cutoff date be established for the special events. He says there are too many instances where a member approaches him on the day of the event, states he was not notified, and asks to participate the same day of the event. This causes problems. The vote of the Board was taken and the request to henceforth establish a cutoff date several days before the event was approved.
President Cantwell then introduced the comment of a new member who objected to the manner in which the club assigns Wednesday morning tee times. That member was miffed when he discovered that the same foursomes play with each other each Wednesday and one person registers for his foursome very early and for each of the other members at that time. Thus there is little opportunity for the new member to get a starting time as well as to meet and play with members of the club.
Sid talked to the head pro and was able to secure two more starting times to be added to our block. This will start on August 5 and will be tried for six weeks. If we fill them it will continue. If not they will be canceled.
An extended discussion was held on how the Wednesday morning times were being assigned. The original procedure was a “first come- first registered” sequence with the requirement that to register to play, a person must be physically present to register himself only.
Over time this procedure was modified so that groups could be registered early by one member of the foursome. Many felt that we should continue this present system as members like to play with the same group. Others said we already did that on Mondays and we need to mix it up for the benefit of new members as well as the club in general and revert back to the original system.
After a vote of the Board it was decided effective September 1, each golfer is to be physically present to register himself and play in whatever time slot he is assigned by the front desk.
In the absence of OJ Pilcher absence, Dave Collins reported
on the Handicap Committee’s review of net scores in the Club Championship that
did not reflect accurate handicapping. The result of these handicaps and the
play of the individuals involved was that very large margins separated the
winners in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Net Flights
from the runners up. Such huge margins invariably deprive the remaining players
in the field of fair competition. These winning net scores bettered the
“normal” odds of
The Handicap Committee has both responsibility and authority to modify the players Handicap Index to reflect potential ability and scoring motivation. Letters have been sent to each of the three members notifying them of a determination (which may be appealed) that a downward Handicap Adjustment will be made. The players handicap would be adjusted downward (reduced) and input into the NCGA data base and would show”R” (restricted) for an appropriate period of time, usually at least four months.
The nominating committee is working to find replacements for departing Board members McLeod, Fong, Frankhauser, and Anderson. Those new nominees will be voted upon at the Annual meeting in September. The names of the candidates, along with the names of those appointed to the Board replacing recent resignations, will be placed on the outside bulletin board in August.
John Gannon will have the responsibility for getting the ballots made up and distributed.
It was reported that the club averages at this time 83 players per Monday tournament/event (approximately 21 foursomes).
Treasurer Ted Roshinski provided a six month summary of our finances. The report showed an income of $10,205 with incurred expenses of $9,164.This made for a plus of $1,041 for the period of 01/2009 thru 06/2009.
Don Sutton reported on the Newsletter and asked that a Board member surface willing to take on that job next year.
Frank Frankhauser spoke of the upcoming Annual luncheon in September and will arrange the foursomes as in the past.
Lee Tsai indicated that there were no requests by members to change tee times and all foursomes seem to be content with their times.
The next meeting will be Thursday, October 1 at
