Migratory Bird Management

Losee’s Goose Control has been providing Goose Control 5 days a week and it is going well. Jack mentioned that Jones and Stokes have started to work on a constraint analysis and cost estimate for a nuisance bird management program at Shoreline Golf Links.  Jones and Stokes has met with City Staff and Gary Linn recently and has started to contact outside agencies such as golf courses and regulatory agencies to review existing information and identify potential management practices. Jack will report back at the August meeting on how the process is proceeding.

Superintendent’s Update

Steve advised the Committee that the greens have been verti cut and top dressed this past week. The eleventh tee area, eighteenth rough and the rough on thirteen have been hydro seeded. Steve also reported that some bunkers have had sand added to them.

Questions from Committee Members

Harry asked when the 200yd blue Kirby markers will be installed. Steve and Jack said that they will be looking into this year. Harry also asked about the new cards that were given out on Monday. Jack said he would check it out. Jack talked to Joe and found out that they were not supposed to be put out yet and were done so by mistake. They were pulled and will be put back out when we finish using the old cards. Joe will put a notice out when we start using the cards. You should have received the following information regarding the change in hole handicap allocation.

Committee Members

The change in hole handicap allocation was made to bring our scorecard and the hole handicaps into alignment with the USGA Handicap System. The earlier allocation was based upon how difficult the individual hole was when compared to the par for the hole. That is not the foundation of the hole allocation as defined by the USGA.

The hole handicaps should be allocated such that a higher handicap player competing against a lower handicap player will get assistance on the hole that it is needed. This is defined by comparing more than 200 scores of two groups of players (Group A and Group B) on each individual hole and assigning the handicap based upon the difference on individual hole scores of each group. This was done using scorecards from the Shoreline Golf Club, Shoreline Senior Golf Club and the Shoreline Women’s Golf Club from each of the various tees.

Additionally, the USGA recommends that the handicap allocation for the low numbered strokes not be assigned to the holes near the end of each nine so that players receiving strokes will have an opportunity to use these strokes before the match is decided. Nor should the low numbered strokes be assigned to the first or second holes on a course in the event that a hole by hole play-off is required.

All this means is that the hole allocations on the new card are the handicaps that would apply in a match play or better ball event and our scorecard now is in compliance with the USGA recommendation.

If you have further questions about this matter please contact Joe at 650-903-6135.

Francie reminded Steve and Jack that there is a big Women’s Club Tournament August18, and wanted to make sure that no course projects will be happening that day. She also asked that the possibility of a course news letter for the general public be looked into.
