President’s Message…

Summer is fast fading into Fall when the weather is usually perfect for golf. Let’s hope this year is no different from previous years.

September is the month when we have our Annual Meeting and Election of new Board Members. The nominees for 2008 are listed elsewhere in this Newsletter and on this Web Site. Please make your choice and vote the morning prior to playing. The date is Monday September 17th.

Sign-up forms for our Annual Meeting, Golf, and Elections are available on the Web Site, in the Newsletter and at the Greeter’s Table on Monday mornings. Please sign-up as soon as possible to enjoy coffee and muffins (ready about 7:00AM), followed by golf, followed by lunch, followed by drawings for some great prizes.

Also Renewal forms will be available at the Annual Luncheon and the sooner you renew the lower your renewal cost will be. Please pay particular attention to the question regarding use of your email address. We would like permission to send you information regarding Club business via email.

September 17th Annual Meeting, Election and Golf…

Our day begins with 7:00AM coffee, pastry and voting for directors at Michael’s followed by a shotgun start at 7:30AM.  The Tournament is Best Ball Foursome with Foursomes arranged by the Club.  Our annual luncheon, introduction of newly elected Directors and award of door prizes will follow.  The golf sign-up deadline is September 10 and an entry form can be found on our web site and at the end of this Newsletter.  If you are not planning to play golf, please join us for the free noon luncheon for Club Members.  Call Frank Frankhauser at (650)-948-7432 to sign-up.

Four new directors will be elected from a slate of 5 members running for the Board.  The members running for the Board are:  Sid Cantwell, Harry Emerzian, Syed Hyder, Tom McCarthy, and OJ Pilcher.  The Annual Meeting is your opportunity to express your opinion and vote for Board members.  Your input is important and welcome.  So please plan to attend and vote.

Thank you Nominating Committee of Ron Labrum (Chair), Sid Cantwell, Gene Hawley, Hugo Straub, and Al Wedel for a wonderful slate of candidates.

The Nineteenth Hole by Mike Anderson…

Hey – Summer is almost over and I was just getting used to it. The older I get, the faster time flies.  But let’s be grateful for all our California seasons.  After living through the first 22 years of my life in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, I promised I’d never complain about a single day in California, and that still stands.

And now, lets talk about a young man behind the counter in the Pro shop who is doing a fine job helping all of us would be golfers.  I refer to Will Hornby who has been working for Shoreline for the past 6 months. Will was raised in Seattle, did not start playing golf until the age of 16, but it was an instant love affair.  He started working in the cart barns of the golf course near his home, and then while pursuing his degree in Marketing at San Jose State, worked part time in Pro shops in the area. Upon graduation, Will enrolled in the PGA program, which requires considerable home study and then taking tests administered at the PGA installation in Florida. Will accomplished that and is now certified as a PGA professional.  He is single but married to the career that golf offers.  Stop by and introduce yourself to Will. Maybe you will pick up a tip that will help your game.  It sure needs it.

I ran across a recent article on types of golfers you may run into.  For instance- there’s The Walking Rule Book (“Just so you know, if you hit your golf bag it’s a two stroke penalty”).  Or how about The Cliché Master (“That putt’s afraid of the dark”).  And have you ever played with “The Perpetually Angry Golfer.”  I’ve seen guys who get mad as soon as they slammed the trunk of their car parked in the course parking lot. Remember when you were playing with “Mr. Precision” who took 20 seconds teeing up his ball, or waited for the green to clear 300 yards ahead before hitting his approach shot??  Of course none of these types are member of Shoreline Seniors Golf Club, but they’re out there so be prepared.  If you sight one like I have described let me know. I may write a book on identifying types of golfers. (It’s kind of like bird watching). Have a great round!
