Board Notes…

The Board of Directors voted to send the February 2007 Newsletter with the Club Directory.  Please continue to view our website at www.shorelineseniorsgolfclub.org for future Newsletters, tournament information, and Club News.

At its January 24, 2007 Board Meeting, The Board also appointed Harry Emerzian and Hideo Hashimoto for one year to continue the Board terms of Steve Anderson and Jim Brennock.  In other news, the USGA recently ruled that Distance Measuring Devices may be used to determine distance to a hole and a Local Rule has been established for their use at Shoreline Golf Links.  For details regarding the use of a Distance Measuring Device, refer to Local Rule 11 which is detailed on the back of our Shoreline Scorecard.  Other Local Rules may be found on the back of the scorecard and on our website as well.

Tee Times Available for Singles…

Two tee times have recently become available for single players.  The tee times are at 9:45AM and 10:21AM.  If you are interested, contact Don Sutton or the indicated contact person for the foursome playing at the available tee time.  The contact person can be found on our website or on the Club Bulletin Board at Shoreline Golf Links.

Congratulations, Bill Mykytka…

Bill has been working towards membership in the PGA of America for the past five years.  He completed the PGA Professional Golf Management program and was elected to membership on January 24, 2007.  Way to go, Bill!

From the Desk of Paula Bettencourt…

Course Yardage:  The Northern California Golf Association recently re-measured yardage for each of the eighteen holes at the course.   New scorecards and new tee decals with the updated information were ordered and will be available by the first week of February.

Proposed Changes to Fees at Shoreline Golf Links:  Staff has proposed a few changes to the fees at Shoreline Golf Links.  These proposals were reviewed with the Advisory Greens Committee (AGC) at the Tuesday, January 23 meeting.  The AGC felt the proposals were appropriate and reasonable.

Proposed is an increase in golf cart rental from $22 to $24, back nine $15 to $17 and member club single rider from $11 to $12.  The fee for golf carts has been in place since 1998, is lower than all other courses surveyed and the carts themselves are in excellent condition.  Also, concerning golf lessons, increases to those classes where fees do not cover expenses has been proposed.  A temporary decrease in green fees for Fridays is also proposed.  Green fees for seniors, twilight and super twilight categories were also reviewed but no increases proposed.

The Parks and Recreation Commission will review the proposals at its February 14, 2007 meeting.  The meeting is open to the public and begins at 7:00 PM.  It will be held at the Mountain View Public Library, 585 Franklin Street.

If you would like more information or a copy of the staff report, please contact Paula Bettencourt.  Her email is paula.bettencourt@ci.mtnview.ca.us.  Her telephone number is 650-903-6076.  Also, Jim Whitaker attended the January 23 Advisory Greens Committee meeting as the Senior Club representative and he too can be contacted for more information.

Coots:  This year, the number of coots wintering at Shoreline is larger than we have experienced for several years.  The feces from the coots create issues for golfers.  The birds are protected by Federal law.  Some of the additional measures we have taken to attempt to mitigate the problem include: periodic use of an additional border collie to herd the coots away from the greens and fairways, marshals positioned at key greens chasing the birds away from the green and as available, staff using a blower to remove feces from the greens one to two times per day.  The additional border collie is owned and run by one of the volunteers from the Shoreline Seniors Club.  The Golf Course Superintendent met with the volunteer and dog to provide training.

New Cart Paths for #16 and #18:  The new cart paths at #16 and #18 have been completed.  Staff is currently in the process of issuing bid documents for hydroseeding at #18.

New Staff Member:  Will Hornby has been selected as the new Assistant Golf Professional here at Shoreline Golf Links.  Will comes to us from the cities of Santa Clara and Cupertino.  Will has experience in the “golf business” and is an avid golfer himself.  Please drop by the Pro Shop and say hello to him!
