SHORELINE GOLF LINKS ADVISORY GREENS COMMITTEE
MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON July 27, 2007
In attendance:
Victor Calvo, Harry Emerzian, John Deem, Jim Hendzel, Paula Bettencourt, Steve
Crane. Absent: Francie Green
Paula welcomed and introduced new members
John Deem and Jim Henzel from the Shoreline Golf Club. The basic format of the meeting was
explained. Committee-members Emerzian
and Calvo were pleased to have the new members on board.
Comments from: Paula Bettencourt, Assistant Community Services Director/Golf
Course Manager
1. The
Maintenance Shop at Shoreline Golf Links has received recognition plaque for
outstanding achievement for Ten Consecutive Years as a Clean Bay Business. Congratulations to Steve and his crew for
the diligence in maintaining high standards.
2.
13th Green: Gary Linn of Knott
Brooks Linn has been retained as the Golf Course Architect for the 13th
Green Renovation. He has visited the
site, met with Steve and Paula and will begin the initial drawings later this
month. Project is scheduled to begin in
early October, after the City Championship and greens aeration.
3.
Kirby Markers: Paula asked for
feedback concerning the new white Kirby Markers that were recently
installed. Harry reported he has had
many favorable comments from the seniors and recommends continuing by adding
red and blue markers. Other committee
members agreed the addition was a good idea. The next set to be installed will
be red with blue possibly following in the spring.
4.
Paula reported that preliminary end of year information for 2006-07
shows rounds at 76,635 which is 171 over projection and approximately 1,800
rounds over 2005-06 totals.
Comments from Committee-member Emerzian:
1. How
high will the dirt be at #16 tees?
Steve informed the group that the dirt is at
the “finished” height on the tees. Dirt
that will be brought in this week or next is for low spots and drainage
purposes. Steve is hoping the dirt
import will conclude this week with irrigation installation scheduled for next
week. The tops of the tees will be sodded; the rest will be hydro-seeded. The goal is to complete the project by the
middle of September, before the City Championship.
2.
Harry mentioned that the path from 11 to 12 is difficult to walk as
there is an abundance of goose feces in the area. Steve let the group know that we are purchasing a brush
attachment for existing equipment and the plan is to sweep the areas
regularly.
3.
Harry noticed that it appears there are “extra holes” on the green. Steve informed the group that verdi-cutting
occurred yesterday. The Verdi-cutter
slices the area and any plugs that were not firmly established are pulled out
when the turf is mowed. Staff went out
on the course yesterday and replaced 24 spots.
Comments from Committee-member Calvo:
1.
Vic asked if the NGF report was completed. Paula informed the group the report is completed but all follow
up actions were not. Paula will send
members a copy of the City Manager’s report to Council and will review the
action items with the Advisory Greens Committee at the August meeting.
Comments from Committee-member Deem:
None.
Comments from Committee-member Henzel:
1. John
was concerned about the condition of the bunkers and asked why the bunker
surface was so hard. Steve explained
that 15 to 20 bunkers per year are renovated.
In many areas, the squirrels damage the bunkers within days making it
very difficult to maintain a softer surface long term
Comments from Staff: Steve Crane, Golf Course Superintendent
1.
Steve distributed photos of the work in progress at #16 tees. As indicated earlier, the goal is to
complete the project prior to the City Championship.
2.
Steve is working on a plan to improve the area in front of #11
green. The rock wall installed when the
course first opened has deteriorated with most of the rocks having fallen into
the pond. There are also numerous
squirrel holes in the area. The group
agrees the area has the potential for a very nice scenic Par 3 and encourage
Steve to continue with a plan.
Next meeting will be held on Tuesday, August
28, 2007 at 4:30 p.m. in the Golf Course Conference Room.
