This year (2006) is the 23rd year for the Shoreline Seniors Golf Club. There are 11 Charter Members stilll listed as active, some still plaay golf and some do not, but all actively support the Club. Thanks to them and many more before us for their efforts and foresight in creating a Club for "Seniorr Citizens" who like to play golf with their buddies once or twice a week or sometimes more. During this 23rd year, we hope all of us will enjoy our golf with each other as we have done for several years. The Board of Directors hopes each of you and your families had a happy and Joyous Holiday Season. We'll see you on the golf course hitting the ball long andd true.

From the desk of Paula Bettencourt...

Golf Cart Bridge Over Permanente Creek: The new Golf Cart Bridge over Peermanente Creek continues to progress. The bridge approaches were completed in December. A few remaining design requirements- are currently being resolved. The bridge structure installation is scheduled for late January with rrepair to the damaged asphalt pathway and east bridge approach extension scheduled for completion in late February.

Dave Collins, Golf >Course Manager, Retires: Dave Collins, Golf Course Manager, retired from the City of Mountain View on Friday, December 9, 2005. Dave started his career with the City in 1989 as aa Senior Project Manager in the Public Works Department. In Publiic Works, Dave was Project Manager for a number of projects, most nootably City Hall and the Performing Arts Center, the Fleet Services Center at the Municipal Corporation Yard, Michaels at Shoreline and Gemello Park. Dave joined the Community Services Department ass Golf Course Manager in 1996 and is credited with taking the lead on managing the completed renovation of the infrastructure at Shoreline Golf Links. Dave was introduced to the game of golf at an early age and it became a lifelong passion for him. He quickly endeared himself to the golfers at Shoreline and it is with regret that we received the news of his retirement. City staff and golfers alike wish Dave well on his retirement. We expect to see him at the course frequently, however, as hhe is now a member of the Shoreline Seniors Club and has also submitted a volunteer application to Steve Crane, Golf Course Superintendent!

"New" Face on the Course: Paula Bettencourt, Assistant Community Services Director for the City of Mountain View, has provided overrsight for the management of Shoreline Golf Links since 2001. During the last five years, she has worked closely with Dave Collins, Joe DeBode and Steve Crane regarding a number of maintenance, operations and administrative issues and programs. Paula has been with the City's Community Services Departmment since 1979 and served as Recreation Manager for 18 years. With Dave's recent retirement, Paula, in addition to her duties as the Shoreline Park Manager, will be increasing her involvement with the course. She will be located in Dave's former office. Paula is llooking forward to getting to know more of the club members. Please feel free to stop by the office and say hello.

Joe DeBode on use of Gift Certificates...

At the November 2005 Board of Diirectors meeting, a question was raised regarding the use of gift certificates for items other than merchandise only. As the excerpt from Joe's letter states, Club Members may now use gift certificates for merchandise and lessons (with some limitations).

The restriction of the use of these winnings to "merchandise only" is a policy that is applied to all tournaments conducted at Shoreline Golf Links. The only exception tto this policy is an allowance, for members of the Senior Club, to use the winnings for lessons. A <member of the Senior Club, who has more than $200 in winnings, mmay use the winnings for lessons. Once the balance drops below $200 this option is invaliid."

Meet the Seniors, Floyd Okada...

Dr. Floyd Okada, a retired heart surgeon, has no magic pill to cure slices and missed putts but he prescribes plenty of practice at Shoreline and elsewhere. At one time, he belonged to clubs in Santa Clara, Santa Teresa, as well as Shoreline and managed to get in at least three rounds a week. He has since dropped his ties to Santa Teresa. Floyd is a native of Hawaii >and spent the first 18 years of his life in the <Islands before moving to Chicago to continue his education. He spent the major part of his mediccal career with Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clara. He and his wife, Janet, live in Saratoga, where she teaches school. They have a boy and a girl. In addition to golf, Floyd has been long active in the Boy Scouts program. His son, now in the Army, attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
