Board News…

Website:  At the January 26, 2006 Board meeting, the Board of Directors has decided to develop and fund an official Club Website.  Our new Website address is www.shorelineseniorsgolfclub.org with Syed Hyder heading it up for the year.  Please note this address is similar but different from the previous site and you must use .ORG rather than .COM to access it.  The Board’s intent is to have this new site operational March 1, but until then it will be in transition.  Please bear with us and we apologize for any inconvenience.  Mark the new site as a favorite to receive Club news and Tournament results. In the meantime, Tournament results will be posted on the bulletin board at the Golf Course and OJ Pilcher has agreed to email results to interested golfers.  Please submit your email address to the new Club email address at shorelinesenior@yahoo.com.  The Official Website will also carry the Club Newsletter. If you wish to receive your Newsletter by email, also send your address to the Club email address listed above.

Tee Time Committee: Don Sutton and Hideo Hashimoto will be in charge of tee times for 2006.  While they work on new tee time procedures, the Board of Directors agreed to continue with the present policy and procedures.  The Board of Directors is concerned with the inability of new foursomes to access tee times as well as the inability of existing foursomes to move to a different time.  Thus, the Board is considering a variety of different options for assigning tee times.  Don and Hideo are developing more specific details and a questionnaire for Club member response for the March 2006 Newsletter.

New Board of Directors Member:  Dan Beswick was elected at the Jan 26, 2006 Board Meeting to become the 13th Board Member.  Since Steve Anderson was elected to another three-year term, Dan will fill the one-year Board Member position vacated by Steve as past president.

From the Desk of Paula Bettencourt…

Gift Certificate Redemption:  Head Golf Professional Joe DeBode and Paula Bettencourt, Assistant Community Services Director, recently met with the City’s Director of Information Technology to discuss ways to speed up the process for redeeming gift certificates in the Pro Shop. Those of you present for the Grand Opening/Holiday Sale know first hand how long a transaction involving a gift certificate took-way too long! The length of time needed to process the gift certificates made for lengthy lines for everyone. The good news is that the problem has been solved. New software was uploaded and changes made to the system. Redemption of gift certificates has been greatly expedited which will mean better customer service for all golfers.

Greens – Snow Mold:  We have had several questions recently concerning the "circular brown spots" on some of the greens. Superintendent Steve Crane explains that this is due to a fungus called snow mold, also known as Microdochium nivale. Snow mold develops on the turf as a "frog eye" appearance with a matting of turf on the outside and small spots of green grass in the middle. This fungus will infect turf during wet, cold, and overcast weather conditions.  It can be treated with fungicide applications as we have done twice during the past few months. Dry, warm weather causes the fungus to revert to its dormant state.

Mowing the Rough:  We have also had a few questions regarding the frequency of rough mowing. In the dryer months of spring and summer, the rough mowers are out Monday through Friday. By the end of the week, all of the rough areas have been mowed and we start all over again at the beginning of the next week. In the winter months, the rough mowing is very much weather dependent. The winter mowing is more difficult due to the weight of the equipment that often makes tire ruts and scalps the grass if there are soft areas. Also, with wet and damp turf conditions, the reel mowers have difficulty making a clean cut and will often roll the grass blades over without cutting them.

Holiday Storms:  While Shoreline Golf Links was not severely impacted by the rain and wind over the New Year's weekend, we did experience damage to a number of trees. The Myoporum to the back of #5 white tee and to the left of #15 white tee and the Pine to the back of #15 green were lost due to the storm. Also, prior to the weekend, maintenance crews removed several dead or diseased Cypress trees. They were located to the back of #2 green, the right of #7 rough, the back of #10 tee, the left of #10 rough and the right of #18 tee and #18 rough, about 150 yards from the green.

Handicap Posting Regarding Penalty Scores…

The important point is for the player to be sure to post all his scores to maintain a current accurate handicap. The 10 lowest scores of the most recent 20 rounds posted are used to establish a player’s monthly handicap.  When a player fails to post a score there will be a “low penalty” score posted to his record. Of the 20 most recently posted scores the lowest of these is automatically chosen by the computer as the “low penalty” score to be posted. The lowest score posted remains in your record until you post 20 more rounds when it is then dropped.

PLEASE remember to post all of your scores (high or low). Ask your playing partners to remind you to post every time.

Monday/Wednesday Tournament Questions…

Some of our members have inquired about the conduct of our Monday and Wednesday Tournaments, for example how are flights determined, how sweeps money is allocated, schedule, etc.  Our Tournament Schedule is prepared for one year.  Schedule and dates are approved by the Course Management and by the Shoreline Seniors Board of Directors.  Flights are determined by an individual’s handicap.  Flights usually consist of 13 to 15 players, with the number of flights depending on the number of players playing on a specific Tournament day and how the handicaps fall.  Sweeps monies are distributed equally among flights, with approximately 33.3 percent going to each flight.  Monies in flights are paid in $2.00 increments.  For example, first place in flight will receive $2.00 more than second place in flight; third place in flight will receive $4.00 less than first place in flight, etc.  Any monies not distributed for the particular Tournament is kept in the Club account at the Pro Shop.  The Club account is then used to buy door prizes for distribution at our Annual Meeting and our Member/Guest Tournament.

Congratulations, Ralph Bernstein…

Ralph is the City of Mountain View Nominee for the Volunteer Sponsor Citation Award for 2006.  The California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS) have an annual award function for honoring volunteers that provide services to the various agencies in the area.  Ralph Bernstein has been a volunteer at Shoreline Golf Links in Mountain View since 1983.  Over the last 22 years, he has volunteered for several Course Managers and 8 Head Golf Professionals!  Ralph has been a course marshal, a starter, a greeter, a committee member, a youth counselor and an all around good person.  Recently, Ralph has been supplying the golf course offices with beautiful indoor plants  --  and advice on how to keep them green and healthy.  Ralph is a pleasure to work with.  His service to Shoreline Golf Links is greatly appreciated and it is the City’s privilege to honor Ralph.

Correction, Floyd Okada…

The January 2006 Newsletter stated incorrectly that Floyd Okada’s medical specialty was as a heart surgeon.  Floyd was a general, chest (pulmonary), and vascular surgeon at the Permanente Medical Group since 1972.

Meet the seniors, Hoyt Brackett…

Hoyt Brackett, one of our former club presidents, is a native of Blairsville, Georgia. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and served in the Army for two years during the Korean War ending up with a one-year tour in Germany. He is married and has one son.  Hoyt was a senior engineer at Ford Aerospace in Palo Alto for 26 years and resides in Sunnyvale.  Like many of us, he is still waiting for that first hole in one, which nearly 50 years on the links has failed to produce.
